I’m a Belieber: A Review of Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never”

Movie Facts: Never Say Never 1 hr. 45 min. Rated G Directed by John Chu

I have a disease. There is no cure for it. There is no awareness being raised about it. Yes, it’s true: I have Bieber Fever. I have a new found affinity for purple, I dream of a day when Justin Bieber and I are best friends, and I want to see “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” again.

“Justin Bieber: Never Say Never”, a movie about the teen popstar’s life, premiered on February 11th to audiences across the nation mostly comprised of screaming girls and their parents. The movie provided viewers with an inside look at Justin Bieber’s personal life. John Chu directed the film with clear insight into a young girl’s brain, showcasing Bieber’s hair, child-like face, and often shirtless torso. But this wasn’t enough for Chu. The film is also in 3D and is interspersed with obtrusive commentary by Justin Bieber and his management team.

The majority of the musical-documentary shows Justin Bieber’s modest upbringings and surprisingly lengthy career history. This content is enough to captivate an audience, yet the scenes are overflowing with special effects, 3D titles, and an unnecessary countdown to Bieber’s Madison Square Garden performance. Most likely, Chu chose to add all of these unnecessary embellishments for the sake of the young audience. But Justin Bieber’s story itself was compelling enough to entertain movie-watchers of any age without the often distracting graphics.

The concert scenes were interesting at first but quickly developed into nothing more than a laser show with a constant blaring sound of screaming girls. At one point in the movie, I actually had to cover my ears to drown out the incessant shouting.

However, I still walked out of the theater with a severe case of Bieber Fever. Justin Bieber proved himself as more than just a product of the music industry and saved this movie with his angelic face that lit up the screen and made every girl (and some accompanying fathers) swoon over him. The group of girls sitting in front of me actually took out their phones and took pictures of the movie. They took pictures of a picture. This is just one of the symptoms of Bieber Fever: madness and illogical thought pattern. Another symptom? Writing a review of “Never Say Never”.
