It is no surprise the that Craft Theater was filled to the brim with CHS students and teachers on Thursday, April 14. The school gathered during forum to watch student writers participate in “Shorts on the Ledge”. A longtime Community tradition, “Shorts on the Ledge” is a reading of poems and other short works by Community High School writers.

While usually taking place on the second floor ledge, this year, “Shorts on the Ledge” was relocated last minute to the Craft Theater, which was already set up to accommodate the National Honor Society meeting later in the evening.

The event was hosted by Emmeline Ringquist and Jon Daniel, who both read poems themselves.

The CHS Poetry Club, led by Ellen Stone and Brian Miller, helped to organize this event. Stone explained that writers prepared their poems in advance for the “green” themed reading. Both members of Poetry Club and other students signed up to participate. Poets could either read poems written specifically for “Shorts on the Ledge”, or pieces written for different purposes.

Some CHS poets, such as Sonya Kotov, read poems about being green.  While introducing her poem, Kotov said it was “the greenest poem she has”.  Others, such as Kyle Aaronson, read about high school relationships.  Gil Eisbruch, a CHS senior, read a meaningful poem about his experience at Community High School.

Stone explained that the poetry could be whatever the students wanted. They were free to interpret the “green” theme in any way, or not use it at all. The students could read whatever they wanted.  “People who write poetry are always writing,” Stone said. “If you’re a poet, you always have a poem.”
