Stapleton Forum Wins Tug-o-war on Field Day 2011

The people driving by CHS’s back lawn on Friday, May 27th were met with an unusual sight: The entire student body of Community High, huddled in screaming groups, wearing matching t-shirts, cleats, and gardening gloves.  Forum leaders gave pep talks to their students, full of energy and excitement, all to prepare for one highly anticipated event: Tug-o-War.

Field day is a day of competition. A longtime Community tradition, Tug-o-War is considered largely to be the most important activity on field day.  Tug-o-War is played in a large tournament, with all the forums competing for the trophy.  The bracket is simple: if you loose, you’re out.  This year it was the Stapleton Forum who won the tournament, redeeming themselves from a tough loss to the Kulka forum last year and taking back the title of their 2009 win.

Though the Stapleton Forum entered the back lawn to the jeers of other forums, one forum cheered for them.  Junior and Thomas Forum member Natalie Schultz explained, “The Thomas and Stapleton [forums] have never gotten along, but we’re trying to mend our relationship.  So, I think we were actually one of the only forums cheering for them. We were trying to be supportive.”

Another great part of forum day are the unique forum shirts. “I’m pretty sure we had the best T-shirts,” said freshman and Levin forum member Isabella Ramos. Ramos, like many other Community High School students, was proud to show her forum spirit by wearing a colorful t-shirt designed by her forum.

This time Field Day was different than most years.  Field Day is usually held at Delhi Park, but this year it was changed to be at CHS.  “The parks were closed due to flooding,” Kevin Davis, the CHS Assistant, explained why the location was changed.  Only a few things were different due to the change in location.  “Basically we cut the relay short, we didn’t do the egg toss or the mile run ,” Davis said.

As Forum leader Robbie Stapleton puts it, “It’s the best day of the year.”
