Tod Tharp as Charles the Wrestler

Charles the Wrestler is a big, loud, muscular character played by FOS 2 teacher Tod Tharp in CET’s most recent production of “As You Like It.” Tharp is a calm and easygoing teacher here at CHS. Tharp’s calm personality is reflected in his lifestyle and his teaching, but for Tharp’s role in “As You Like It” he transformed into a character that is nearly the polar opposite of himself.

Tharp describes Charles the Wrestler as “a total bad ass.” Tharp was dedicated to transforming into his character both mentally and physically. For Tharp, that included working out, afterscool as well as growing a Foo Man Chu for a macho Hulk Hogan kind of look. Tharp also stated that sometimes the Foo Man Chu affected his teaching slightly. It gave him an intimidating edge with his students.

“I love to just eat and lounge, and for me my weight has always been a concern.”

Tharp has continued working out, but he is afraid of losing his workout routine now that the play is over. Tharp said acting in the play was a great experience, but he did have to make some sacrifices when he accepted the role. Tharp had to take into consideration that he would be spending time away from his family, and he would most likely fall behind on his grading. Tharp also stated that he had some stage fright especially opening night.

Despite the sacrifices, Tharp said that he very much enjoyed being in the production. He liked working with a lot of his students, working with them as equals and now feels more confident after his role. Tharp feels his lifestyle has changed as well, and he hopes to act in future productions.
