Slow Processing in the Media Center

Unprocessed books
The media center has acquired several new books that have yet to be processed.

The library changes may not be apparent to the students of Community, but the staff of the media center is definitely noticing the differences. Budget cuts, fewer operating hours, and switching staff to part time has been constricting the amount of new books and general flow of the library.

“[Being] part time has really affected the number of students that come to the library. I used to get 30 or 40 students in an hour in the library on a daily basis and now it’s to about a little less than half that … maybe about 20?  I think that’s because the hours are not as flexible,” said resident media specialist Nat Powell as he reflects on changes this year.

Due to the change in hours, bringing books into circulation and processing them has become a challenge. “We don’t do it as quickly as we did before because we’re just not here to do it,” said Powell. Often there can be seen a stack of new books that have not yet been brought into circulation.“Once we get the chance to process them, I think you’ll be really happy to see what [we’ve] got.”

“Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Saenz, “The Difference Between You and Me” by Madeleine George, and “Empire Summer Moon” by S.C. Gwynne, are just a few of the new books that’ll hopefully be on the media center shelves soon.
