Battleship Movie Review

Battleship, directed by Peter Berg, was released to the United States on May 18th of this year. This movie is based on the popular childhood game made by Hasbro, but with an action packed and extraterrestrial twist.  Containing popular faces like action movie legend Liam Neeson, swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker, and pop singer Rihanna, this movie did well in box office profits, with a total of $302, 836, 2560, but got mediocre reviews from sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

This movie is based in the Hawaii Islands where the international Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) begins, bringing the world’s navies together for training. At the same time, the US government has been trying to contact a planet similar to Earth with satellites positioned on Oahu. While the exercises begin, unidentified objects from space land in Japan and off the coast of Hawaii, were RIMPAC is taking place.  These UFOs are soon proved to be from another planet and very hostile, leading to the biggest naval battle the Earth has ever seen.

Battleship came out in theaters in May, 2012.

The focus of this movie was more on special effects and breathtaking action. Though there is a plot present, it is easy to lose track of where it is going while the world ends and the bullets fly. It seems like a movie that was made with enough parts of the original game, like the two sided “guess and check” warfare, so that anyone who played it could relate to it, but even if you didn’t the story is captivating enough to make you want to watch  through to  the end.  This movie would be best suited for teens to adults who like action, know what the game is about, and enjoy seeing popular actors.
