The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold, is a beautifully written story coming from a tragic event. Susie is just a normal middle school girl who innocently walks through a field, when her seemingly harmless neighbor approaches her. Mr. Harvey then brutally rapes and murders all that was once Susie. Nobody realizes, however, that after the girl’s mysterious death, Susie is always watching and there for her family even from heaven. Susie’s story is told from her personal heaven and her journey watching and occasionally appearing in the lives of those she touched. Susie’s story is exceptionally creative and unique and concludes with a fulfilling, unexpected twist. The Lovely Bones is an incredibly accurate account of the distance people go to cope with losses and yet keeps the reader continually satisfied with the amazing story line.
