CHS Promotes Wellness During Lunch Break

March is Depression Awareness Month. Community High School’s Depression Awareness Group (DAG), works to “Reduce Stigma and Raise Awareness.” This year they are having a weekly Wellness Break for the first 30 minutes of lunch in the Dance Body Studio on the first floor every Friday of March. “It’s a time to enjoy 20-30 minutes in the middle of the day to practice wellness,” said Robbie Stapleton, the DAG advisor and Community High School’s Health and Personal Fitness teacher.

Schedule for Dance Body Studio for the first 30 minutes of lunch:

March 10- Yoga

March 17- Meditation

March 24- Dance Party with Judith

March 31- An Exercise Surprise

Yoga

Yoga mats were unrolled on the wooden floors of the Dance Body Studio ready to be filled up by Community High School students doing yoga. Rebecca Lindsay, an instructor from Ann Arbor School of Yoga, came in to lead the Wellness Break on March 10.

Lindsay spoke about two types of poses: heating and cooling. Heating poses are back bending poses that help “pump you up,” while cooling poses are forward bending poses that “calm you down.”

Lindsay then lead the group through 20 minutes of yoga. She started the session with three call and response oms while sitting in a cross-legged position. Next the group stood shoulder-width apart with their arms straight and stretched up with their weight on their heels. This was  followed by a sequence which involved downward dog. She finished up the short session with a back-bend, a cross-legged twist back stretch and a “namaste.”
