Momo Tea, The New Kid on the South U. Block

From the high altitude mountains of Taiwan to our local Ann Arbor streets, Momo Tea is bringing us its quality teas. The bright orange shop attracted the attention of locals even before it opened summer 2009.

Angie stands behind the counter, which is overflowing with an assortment of brightly wrapped Taiwanese treats. Angie is the teahouse’s manager and has worked there since day one of the opening. “Tea is to Asia like coffee is to America,” she explains. Momo Tea is a traditional Taiwanese teahouse. With their intricate menu you can design any type of tea imaginable. Choices vary anywhere from a simple green tea to Momo’s special boba milk tea to a lemon kumquat tea with almond tofu jello. Their menu not only has a more than ample selection of tea but also offers Taiwanese entries, sandwiches and snacks. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere it is a wonderful place for anyone.

Why choose Ann Arbor for the opening of a tea house? The owner of Momo tea has a son who studied at the U of M, and although he has since graduated, Ann Arbor seemed like a perfect place to stay. “A lot of cities in Michigan aren’t doing well,” Angie says, “but Ann Arbor is a beautiful city.”

Some may wonder why why Momo tea would open across the street from Bubble Island when they both serve such similar, exotic drinks. But competition is virtually non-existent because the two shops have such different focuses. “We are a totally different type of business,” explains Angie. Everything is imported directly from Taiwan and in some cases it even matters exactly what mountain the tealeaves come from. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing and a place many students choose to come and study.
