Senior Tim Null is the salad eating champion

Community High School does not have the Friday night football game to prepare for. Instead we have our community service day. To raise awareness and enthusiasm for this event, Forum Council put on Green Week. “We wanted to take Community back to its roots,” said Forum Council Co-Chair Jacob Garber. The week consists of Meatless Monday, a salad eating contest on Tuesday, Fruity Wednesday, Earth Day on Thursday, and Farm Fresh Friday.

Ten ways to be green:

1. Turn the lights off behind you

If a tree falls and no one’s around to hear it, does it make a noise? If a light’s on when no one’s in the room, turn it off.

2. Print on both sides

It takes more energy to recycle a piece of paper than it does to reuse it. Print on the back of scrap paper and old essays.

3. Break the plastic water bottle habit- bring your own!

Bottled water costs $1.25 at Sweetwaters. Bringing your own reusable water costs nothing. Do it.

4. Join the Ecology Club

Get involved with the Ecology Club at Community led by Courtney Kiley; it’s a great way to have fun and help out Mother Nature.

5. Walk or bike to school

Reduce carbon emissions by riding your bike or walking to school. Get fresh air, and exercise while you get where you need to go.

6. Buy Used

Leif Gearhart-Hall got used shoes and loves them. Be like Leif. Thrift shops have great, unique clothing for all ages. Not only are you helping the earth, but you’re also helping yourself.

7. Turn off the faucet

You don’t need to have the faucet on while you brush your teeth. Really.

8. Recycle used cell phones

Those lame dinosaur phones can still call people. Scrounge your house and donate used or broken cell phones to the Ecology Club.

9. Get a lunch box

If you pack your lunch in a paper bag, you might as well be suffocating a tree. Start packing your lunch in a lunch box. If you don’t pack your lunch, it’s a good time to start.

10. Spread the word

Get green with your friends! Spread the word about the simple things you can do to help Planet Earth.
