A Night in Hollywood

On Friday, May 14th, Community High School’s prom took place at Eastern Michigan University’s student center. Though the official start time was 8:00 pm, most students showed up fashionably late around 9:30. A short stretch of red carpet was set up at the entrance to recreate the theme “Hollywood at Night.” CHS counselor, John Boshoven and CHS jazz band teacher Jack Wagner posed as red carpet interviewers, jokingly asking students questions such as whether their shoes were Prada or Gucci.

Though Prada and Gucci were not popular designers at this year’s prom, students’ attire ranged from pink dress pants to classy handmade dresses. Despite the popular tradition of couples only, many students came with a group of friends instead. The atmosphere was friendly and low key as not only students, but teachers danced too. At one point, the crowd gathered around as three senior girls took center stage and performed a choreographed dance to “Single Ladies,” played by the channel 9.55 DJ.

Students could mingle between the dance floor, refreshments, gambling games, and a photo booth. Plastic bags filled with fake gambling chips were given out so students could practice their gambling skills, risk free. Students had the option of getting professional photos taken by Rocky Gonet and funny photos at the onsite photo booth, complete with colorful floppy hats, oversized sunglasses, and feathery boas.

During the last song everyone held hands and formed a circle, swaying back and forth in unison. When the DJ announced that the night was complete, some students could barely contain their excitement that the school year was nearing and ran around with goofy smiles, hugging friends, clearly full of energy for a long night ahead. Other students looked happy but tired from a night of dancing, clearly more in the mood for 12 hours of sleep.
