Huron Men’s Cross Country Has Meet On Lake Erie

With the cross country season in full swing, runners throughout Community High are putting in hours of work during practices and meets; this weekend the Huron High School men’s cross country team competed at a meet in Monroe.
At 9:00 AM Saturday morning athletes from seven teams assembled at the starting line to begin the 5K race. Sterling State Park, located alongside Lake Erie situated between a nuclear power plant and a cement factory, is home to a competitive 5K course.
“I really like the course because it’s right along the side of Lake Erie and its pretty flat no hills and it’s one I know very well,” Sean Tichenor said, a senior on the Huron cross country team.
Both the varsity and the junior varsity teams placed fourth out of seven and eight teams respectively. “[The meet] was all right. I felt pretty good because I had a season record but the team could be doing a little better in the standings,” Tichenor said. Huron’s athletes look forward to this meet annually due to its beautiful location as well as the chance to take a dip in the lake after the race.
Outside of competition the team practices every day. “On Sundays we meet up at nine and we drive out on Huron River Drive. We run [for] 10 miles all the way back to Huron and when we’re done we get a donut from Dexter bakery,” Tichenor said. “I like working hard everyday with the team and I get to improve personally. We’re all working together for our own individual goals but at the same time going towards a team effort.”
After the meet Saturday the whole team went to a team dinner hosted by one of the athletes. This entailed pasta followed by an obligatory game of Ultimate Frisbee and some Basketball. “We bonded with great ceremonies and flying plastics,” Connor Wright said, a junior on the team.
