Spork Game 2017

Jenny Dean was sitting quietly at her table in forensics class, examining her chapstick, preparing to apply it to her dry lips. All of a sudden, she felt a jab on her left shoulder. She looked up to see Zach Cameron, smiling. Dean then realized she had set her spork down in order to better examine her chapstick. At this moment, it seemed like her heart broke into a million pieces.

As of Feb. 22, and it has been nine days since the annual Community High Spork Game began. In those nine days, 42 of the 96 players have been spork-ed, and eliminated from the game.

The Spork Game is a tradition for seniors here at Community. Every year, a couple of students take charge of the Spork Game by organizing it, buying the sporks, passing them out and keeping everybody updated on the game. This year, Maggie Mihaylova and Adrian Huntley have taken up that position. They call themselves the “Spork Committee.” Every senior has the option to pay five dollars to the Spork Committee to get a spork.

Every person playing has to keep their spork in their hand. If someone is spork-ed while their spork is not in their hand, they are out of the game. This year, the Spork Committee has determined the following rules for the game: 1) Spork must be visible, 2) Spork cannot be attached; must be able to be supported independently, 3) No violence to remove someone’s spork, 4) Official safe zones are established by employers/teachers, 5) Spork must be in one piece and 6) The Spork Committee must decide serious controversy.

According to Mihaylova, the game will go on until there is only a handful of players remaining. Those spork-ers will then all get some of the money that was collected by the Spork Committee at the beginning of the game.

“Being the winner of the spork game is a very honorable title, I think it’s even better than the money,” said Emily Fishman, Community senior. Soon after, she was brutally spork-ed in forensics class on Valentine’s Day. Fishman no longer enjoys Valentine’s Day.
