“Somebody To Love” by British rock band Queen is the opening song in the crowd favorite film Bohemian Rhapsody. Racking in more than 740 million dollars globally, Bohemian Rhapsody has been a worldwide success.
The film follows the life of Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury, from his joining the band in 1970 to the famous Live Aid concert in 1985. Rami Malek plays the role of Freddie Mercury with ease. His preparation for the role was extensive but certainly paid off. Malek fully embraced the flamboyant personality of Mercury, and his co-stars agree.
Ben Hardy, Gwilym Lee, and Joe Mazzello play the other members of the band Roger Taylor, Brian May, and John Deacon respectively. Both May and Taylor were real influencers for the creative and musical aspects for the film.
With cinema award season coming to a close. Oscars were given out at the 91st Academy Awards on Feb. 24, Bohemian Rhapsody won four of the five awards they were up for. Taking home the Academy Awards for best sound mixing, best sound editing and best film editing, along with best actor given to Rami Malek for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody has had an impressive season. The film also took best picture at the Golden Globes, where Malek won best actor as well.
The film has been criticized by the media and Queen fans, saying that the movie was not an accurate portrayal of Mercury’s life and left out important details of what made Mercury the incredible musician and person that he was. Having read extensive amounts about Mercury and the film, itself, I disagree with these comments. Bohemian Rhapsody is not a documentary, and I think that’s what many people are making it out to be. If the film had been a documentary then yes, the film did leave some details out that would have been important in documenting Freddie Mercury’s life. But the film is a biopic — a movie that depicts a life in a fictional manner — on Queen’s legacy and Mercury’s life. Adding and omitting characters is acceptable. The purpose of a biopic film is to compel drama, not to re-create a reality. Therefore, Bohemian Rhapsody is a cinematic masterpiece.
Along with the fact that Bohemian Rhapsody is a biopic film, it also had major input from the real members of Queen. Roger Taylor and Brian May had a large part in the creation of the movie. Queen fans who say that the film doesn’t do the story justice can’t be correct because much of the story was told by two real members of the band, and then made into the film.
Rami Malek, Ben Hardy, Gwilym Lee and Joe Mazzello bring the story of Queen to life in Bohemian Rhapsody. With authentic rock concerts, real vocals mixed with the recordings of Queen and the portrayal of each character to a T, the film is deserving of every award that it won.
