Photographer Madison Rae Key worked in the Craft Theater of CHS, taking pictures of students. Key was amused by seniors and staff dressed in overalls and wearing silly hats or even full costumes for their picture day photos.
“I love taking pictures of my high schoolers,” Key said. “[They’re] my most favorite group, and it’s usually because the seniors are always coming in with creative stuff.”
Picture day is a day-long event where students and staff go to the Craft Theater during their free periods to get their picture taken. This year, picture day was on Friday, Sept. 5. These pictures are used for their school IDs, the yearbook photos and personal memorabilia.
Junior Tempe Stiverson and sophomore Kyle Grant both adopted a relaxed approach to picture day, dressing casually. Grant and Stiverson agree that it’s interesting to see how people’s school pictures change as they get older. Grant explained that they like the way that they act now that they’re in high school more than the way they acted when they were younger.
“I kind of like [that school pictures change] because I’ve changed a lot over time, and the people who don’t know me can see that I’ve changed,” Grant said.
“I think they look more like me every year,” Stiverson said. “I like them more every year.”
Social studies teacher Chloe Root also enjoys looking back on their own school pictures, especially those from high school.
“There’s a period of my life when I was a teenager [during which] I didn’t take a whole lot of pictures of myself,” Root said. “It’s cool to be able to see what I looked like as I grew and also as my style changed.”
Junior Walker Ledbetter felt that picture day went well for him. Ledbetter sometimes looks back at his school pictures, but he mostly just uses them for his parents and school. He admits that he doesn’t care as much about the picture itself.
“It’s a nice tradition just to see everybody here at the school,” Ledbetter said.
Ledbetter has some plans for next year, though. In line with a CHS tradition where seniors wear silly props or outfits on picture day, he is considering wearing a hat or even matching with his friends for his senior year picture.
Other than dressing casually for Picture Day, some people decided to get dressed up for fun. Ryan Silvester dressed up in a dinosaur onesie as a joke. It had been used for a previous Halloween costume, and sat in Silvester’s classroom for a few years until now.
“I felt great about my outfit because Kevin dared me to wear it in exchange for a Zingerman’s sandwich,” Silvester said. “I still haven’t received that sandwich yet, though.”
