There are a number of lunch options for Community students in Kerrytown: Monahan’s Seafood, Sweetwaters, Pizza Pazza and Little Kim. While the weather is still nice, an additional option is the Ann Arbor Farmers Market located across the street from CHS. The food served is farm to table, meaning that all the food is fresh and is from local markets. Every Wednesday, the Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market comes to life, with vendors lining both sides of the street, providing several different options for both lunch and shopping.
Vendors change from week-to-week, but they are all from local Michigan farms. The products also change depending on seasonality and vendor availability, but generally they include seasonal fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, cheese, baked goods, honey and oils. There are also non-food items such as soaps, candles, t-shirts and holiday wreaths.
CHS sophomores Conrad Marra and Ira Quin visited the market for the first time this school year. They first went at the end of last year and they have been looking forward to going back and diving into the new foods of the market.
“I think it’s fun that all of these different snacks and drinks are here,” Marra said. “It’s been a great opportunity for fresh food and just to take a break during the school day and walk around.”
Last year, Marra bought a cinnamon bun from the Apple Cider and Pastries stand, which he said was the size of his head, and ever since then, he has enjoyed going back to see what’s available to grab for the occasional treat.
“We can’t wait for future Wednesdays where we can explore more parts of the market and to try different foods,” Quin said.
The farmers at the Cider and Pastries vendor also enjoy their time at the Wednesday market, and particularly enjoy interacting with CHS students and local families. Jason Sutherland, an apple cider, fruit and pastry farmer, has the pleasure of being one of the farmers selling his goods at the market. For Sutherland, the most important part is to bring fresh farm-to-table food for all of the CHS students and families to enjoy.
“I have been working for the farm for a long time and we grow all our fruit produce,” Sutherland said. “We’re also a full bakery so our customers are the first people who get the product.”
For Sutherland, the Farmers’ Market is an opportunity for his stand to share its products and see them being enjoyed and appreciated. He especially recommends trying the peaches as they are perfectly in season right now.
Stop by the Ann Arbor Farmers Market next Wednesday for some delicious local treats!
