For sophomore Bea Britt, art runs in the family. She has been drawing all her life and continues to spend time creating art with her grandfather.
“My grandpa is really interested in art and does a lot of oil paintings,” Britt said. “I would draw a lot in his art studio as a little kid.”
Though Britt mostly draws from imagination, she wants to become better at realism as she grows as an artist.
“I’m trying to get into more of using references,” Britt said. ”It’s just easier to draw with that.”
Britt enjoys drawing friends and family and is one of Community’s many artists with a love for capturing human likeness.
“My favorite art piece is really just my portraits of people that I really love,” Britt said.
She often draws people or nature, like flowers and trees. For her, the hardest part of drawing is when she makes a mistake on a piece or it doesn’t come out the way she wanted it to.
“When a piece doesn’t turn out well,” Britt said, “I can get discouraged and feel like I’m a bad artist.”
Britt generally prefers a black and white color scheme over various colors. However, she enjoys working with watercolor.
“My favorite part of the whole process is filling it in with watercolor,” Britt said. “It’s such a fun medium.”
Britt tends to use basic materials like pen and pencil and prefers traditional art over digital. Even so, she hopes to improve her digital art skills over time.
“It just doesn’t feel the same,” Britt said. “It’s really hard to work with.”
For beginners, Britt recommends learning how to use shapes and practicing a lot. Britt herself practices every day. As she knows from experience, no matter what kind of drawing you do, it can’t hurt to take an art class. While she uses some inspiration from other artists, Britt is still trying to create her own art style.
Currently, she is branching out and taking digital photography classes. However, Britt’s dream is to go to college, major in art and find her place in the art industry.
“It’s one of my ideas for a career,” Britt said. “It’s just a way to relax and be in my own world.”
