Facebook Status: What’s the Point?

Facebook Status: Whats the Point?

This morning, when I logged in my Facebook account, I first noticed a lot of updated status on my homepage.
Lyrics of songs, author quotes or just random sentences about where people were or what they were doing.
The question that popped up in my head, after reading through some of them was: why do people update their status?

A group of students surveyed said they usually updates their status between once a day and once a week, at least; they put lyrics of songs, author quotes or just personal thoughts, simply and honestly answering the standard question set in the white writing box: “What’s on your mind?”People  interviewed said that the status on Facebook is a way to express how they feel, both good or bad, to fill the need of sharing emotions and feel understood by others.

No matter their purpose, man statuses are made by lyrics or quotes, is there a reason why people share their favorite parts of songs on the social network?“When I publish quotes or lyrics is because I like the message they transmit and they are often for an implicit recipient,” said a 18-years-old girl,“They put my feeling’s into words,” said an other 17-years-old girl.

From the other side a boy answered that he just want to advertise songs he likes and make people listen to them.

Even with different intents then, the final achievement is the same: share feelings and opinions and expect a response, even if often the message is conveyed through others’ words.

It is also true that sometimes people get obsessed by updating their statuses and they end up doing it too many times a day bothering all their friends, “Some people use Facebook statuses just to write everything they are doing. It becomes annoying. I don`t really care if someone`s math class was boring; it`s something you really don`t need to tell the world,” said a 17-year-old.

When tooo frequentely updated, can become bothersome to other people. However, they mean something more for the people who write them, sharing thoughts and inspiring appreciation.

“I feel happy when people like my status on Facebook because maybe what you feel is shared by others, and this makes you feel better I guess,” said a 17-year-old boy.

Another 17-years-old boy said, “Having people commenting and like your status, it’s a sign of appreciation, so I know that people read it and payed attention to it.”

“I feel good because having comments and likes mean that other people like the same song or quote  that I like or they just understand how I feel in that moment,” said a 15-years-old girl.

Facebook staus may be a great tool if used wisely. That`s why when you`re on Facebook you should spend 30 seconds and comment on or like a friend`s status. It might not mean anything to you, but it could make someone else feel good.
