Dollar Smoothie Day

When people hear “Smoothie King,” many think of their delicious smoothies and endless variety. The store, located at 222 4th Ave. Ann Arbor, MI 48104, is always playing music to create a welcoming environment for new customers. In front of the counter, hung on the wall, is their menu with countless options for smoothies. The smoothies are categorized based on the effect the smoothie will have; for example the “Stay Healthy” smoothies contain ingredients that improve one’s overall health. Another category is “Trim Down.” These smoothies are 400 calories or less, and some even help to promote weight loss in other ways.
Their other smoothies fall under the categories of “Get Energy” “Shape Up” “Snack Right” “Indulge” and “Kids Kups.” “I really like the health side to [the smoothies]. You can get the protein, and the “Trim Down”. I try to vary it so if I’m on a diet I can get a smoothie for lunch and then I’m not hungry,” said Ben Detlefs, a loyal customer to Smoothie King.
Many customers at Smoothie King know of their legendary “Dollar Smoothie Day.” On this day, a small-sized (select flavors listed below) smoothie is sold for one dollar. “Dollar Smoothie Day started as a promotion for the store just to kinda get our name out there, to get more people coming in—a marketing technique,” said Justin, an employee of Smoothie King for a year and a half. The tradition started in 2008, and has been going strong ever since.
Dollar Smoothie Day has always been a favorite among Community High School students. In 2012, the store was constantly overflowing on that day with people carrying one of four types of smoothies (Strawberry Kiwi Breeze, Mangosteen Madness, Strawberry Extreme, Caribbean Way and Angel Food).
When Community High School kids found out that there would be no Dollar Smoothie Day this year, many were upset. “I love it because I often don’t buy smoothies ‘cause they’re more over priced and on Dollar Smoothie day I always make sure I buy one,” said Alona Shewach, a Community High junior.
After multiple interviews and conversations with workers and the manager, Community High students were offered an opportunity for a restricted Dollar Smoothie Day. On Wednesday, June 5 2013 students will be able to purchase a small smoothie for one dollar if they present their student IDs. Because of the downsizing of the event, only two flavors of smoothies will be available: MangoFest and Caribbean Way.
Many students will flock to Smoothie King tomorrow, from 11-3 for a fantastic deal and a delicious treat. Come get your own!
