Devin Weeks: Pioneer Basketball’s Future
Devin Weeks, a sophomore at Community, has been playing basketball for twelve years. Weeks’ dad, Steve Vinson, introduced the game to him when he was three years old.
Vinson is currently the head coach of the Huron Women’s Basketball team, and previously coached at Eastern Michigan and Weeks’Amateur Athletic Union AAU team. Weeks said he hated that his dad coached the team because “He knew whenever I was slacking off and their was more pressure not to mess up”. Vinson pushed Weeks’ to always work hard and improve. One of Weeks’ earliest memories is of the first time he played on an eight foot rim. He says “ I remember how much I enjoyed playing with my friends”.
To Weeks’, basketball is more than a sport, it is a way to hang out with his friends. Weeks says that his greatest moment was when he hit a buzzer beater three-pointer to take his team make it to the championship game of a Michigan basketball camp tournament. When asked why this was so great he said, “I liked that moment because I got trusted to take the shot, that out of everyone I got chosen”. Since then Weeks’ has only gotten better.
Weeks’, now the starting point guard for Pioneer’s JV squad, wasn’t always sure if he was going to go to Pioneer. He was considering going to Huron because his dad is the womens coach so he is familiar with their playing style but says, “I like Pioneer’s playing style, but I’m more familiar with Hurons style of play… But pioneer is definitely the best place for me.”
He enjoys Pioneer’s style of play because he gets to be a true point guard. He mans the back court with fellow sophomore Brian Guo, with three freshman, Derrick Murray, Chris Macgouy and Jordan Currie who start in the front court. Weeks” thinks very highly of the freshman, stating, “We have three new freshman who came in and are looking pretty good and they are going to help us a lot this year and we’ll be a lot better than last year”.
Weeks’ believes that the JV city championship will be between Pioneer and Huron. He thinks this year’s Pioneer team has a better chance to beat Huron than in past years, because Huron usually has the height advantage but Pioneer has added a lot of height so that should be a match up to watch later in the season. This year’s team looks to be excellent and his opponents seem to think Weeks’ will be important to the team.
Jack Beldin, a freshman on Skyline, says “I think Devin Weeks is a good player… he is best at scoring… he does a nice job of mixing it up with passing… I would compare him to Damien Lillard”. His former teammate, William Welch thinks highly of Weeks’ as well, “Devin is a great distributor of the ball… I think he should take more shots, he is a great shooter… he reminds me of Rajon Rondo”. If Weeks’ hopes to accomplish what he thinks his team is capable of, his opponents and teammates think he needs to shoot more and distribute less. Because it will take pressure off the freshman and make them not feel like they need to be great from the start.
Weeks’ continues to improve on the court. He believes he will make the varsity squad next year and should if he continues to improve. He hopes to win the state title while at Pioneer.
