Song of the Day: Four “Five Seconds” by Lido and BrassTracks
Kanye West has reinvented himself many times over the last 10 years. From the old-school rap of “College Dropout” and “Late Registration,” to the techno sounds of “808’s and Heartbreak,” to the electronic bass-heavy rhythms of “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” you never really know what’s coming next from Yeezy. His most recent musical switcheroo has been his most surprising yet, transforming his traditional rapping into heavily-autotuned, but still beautiful singing. He debuted this new style in a melodic collaboration with Paul McCartney titled “Only One.” However, the “that was so nice we should do it twice” technique didn’t really work for them, as their second song together (with Rihanna), “FourFiveSeconds” never really found itself. And though the actual recording of the song was mediocre at best, the melody is full of potential, potential which was unlocked by the forward thinking minds of “BrassTracks.” Defining themselves as being in the genre of “Future Brass,” Brasstracks brought out the best of the song with exciting horns, popping drums and soothing background organs.
