pride and prejudice book

Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, appeals to readers because of the era it was both set and written in: the Regency era in England. It tells the story of a family with five daughters, many of age to be wed. All of these girls are different. The main character, Elizabeth Bennet, is the most rational. She will only marry for love, unlike her sisters and friends. Her sister, Jane, becomes friendly with Mr. Bingley, a wealthy estate owner. Through Mr. Bingley and Jane, Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy, an arrogant and proud man. Elizabeth and Darcy appear to be complete opposites, and she finds him unbearable. Later, Mr. Darcy sees Elizabeth in a new light, though he himself is no less disagreeable than before. Elizabeth begins to realize their similarities, while he is trying to change his disposition in order to gain the affection of Elizabeth.
