Don’t Vote Trump

What does one think of when one hears the word “president?” What may come to mind is a leader, someone who can be trusted and looked up to as a role model. Someone who believes in true equality for all American citizens. What comes to mind when one hears “Trump?” Hate, unacceptance, distrust, disgust and disbelief.

Donald Trump has shown that he is an unfit choice for the next president of the United States. He belittles others, speaks without thinking and refuses to back down. In a recent poll conducted by Fox News, only 20 percent of those polled thought that Trump was a good role model, and 54 percent thought that about Clinton. If only 20 percent of people think that a candidate is a good role model, should they really be the person that children look up to for the next four years?

Take, for instance, the recent incident with his 2005 Access Hollywood video. In the final presidential debate on Oct. 19, Trump said, “Those stories have been largely debunked.”Although these stories were investigated, only a few of them have faced opposition, and it is mostly a matter of Trump’s words against the victims’. These women are being criticized and called liars for telling the truth and speaking out against their attacker. This is promoting the kind of disgusting behavior exhibited by Trump, not only in this instance, but countless other times as well. As Clinton put it so well, “Donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger. He goes after their dignity, their self worth, and I don’t think there is a woman anywhere who doesn’t know what that feels like. So we now know what Donald is and what he said and how he acts toward women. That’s who he is.” Trump is careless and heartless. He does not care about what he says or does because he knows that nothing will really happen, and his campaign will continue. And so far, he’s proven himself correct.

Character is not the only thing to take into account during this election. Policy is the most important, and most overlooked topic during election season. Donald Trump wants to build a wall. He wants to force out all illegal immigrants, who, according to Trump in May, are “Bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists.” During the last presidential debate, Hillary remarked, “Half of all immigrants—undocumented immigrants—actually pay federal income tax. So we have undocumented immigrants in America who pay more federal income tax than a billionaire[Trump].” This statement supports the fact that most illegal immigrants are not harmful at all—they are just looking for better lives and opportunity. After all, isn’t that what our country really stands for?

Most Trump supporters like the simplicity of Trump’s ideas. If we don’t want immigrants, build a wall. If we want more jobs, we’ll make them. If we want to cut taxes, we’ll cut them. Sadly, the world really doesn’t work that way. We can’t take big problems and simplify them, assuming that the outcome will be okay, or that people will be willing to. A president needs to have a plan that works for everyone, or at least for some people and not a specific group. Trump’s plans only benefit certain people, like the wealthy and privileged. We need someone who is working for the good of all the American people.

Trump is also liked because he says he wants to put Americans first. He wants our country to be the best, and he won’t let foreign competition or immigrants steal our jobs. He says that foreign competition is costing our country valuable jobs, when in fact, as Clinton pointed out in the last debate, not only did Trump hire foreign labor, but he “Used undocumented labor to build Trump Tower.” He only makes these kinds of statements when they are benefiting him or people like him. What was he saying when he was building his business empire on cheap, undocumented labor? Nothing. He also hasn’t done anything about the loopholes in tax laws that allow him and his companies to not pay taxes, because that would cost him money that he doesn’t want to spend.

A president should be someone that makes their country proud, and makes citizens feel valued and welcomed. Trump doesn’t want that. He wants to force Americans out of their homes, to not allow refugees shelter, and to oppress American women and minorities. The comments he makes and his policies show that he is, and never should have been considered, a good fit for the next president of the United States.
