In my ears: Ian Fishbach
“My favorite song at this moment is Deutschland by Rammstein. It’s a heavy metal song. I think a lot of Americans would have misconceived notions about Rammstein if they didn’t know the words. The refrain is something like: ‘I love you, I hate you.’ [It’s] about Germany, and it’s about ambivalent love and hatred of the past of their country. One of the reasons I like it is because I think it’s very honest. I can’t think of an American song that does that. I’ve seen very jingoistic patriotism, and I’ve seen a lot of people who really don’t like America. And I don’t often hear artistic expressions that capture both feelings simultaneously.”
