Nestled in the middle of the Ann Arbor Farmers Market is a soy candle stand: Vogue Booge Candles. For owner, James Vooge, it is much more than a business.
Vooge’s love for candle making started when he was a young boy. He was first introduced to the craft at an art exhibit in Colonial Williamsburg. From then on, he was hooked. Vooge spent his time experimenting with scents, waxes and wicks; trying to perfect his recipe.
Now, the candles that he sells are directly inspired by childhood.
“They’re all themed to remind me of something in Michigan,” Vooge said.
Vooge made his business official in 2016. After selling a couple candles, business started to pick up, and he choose to dedicate more of his time to the craft.
“It was growing, growing, growing and it was bigger than my job,” Vooge said. “So I left my job.”
For Vooge the best part of working at the market is not the candles themselves but the people he sells them to. Now, every Wednesday and Saturday he gets to share his passion with the community.
