Humans of Community: Kaylie Peters

“I’m a martial artist. I have been training in taekwondo since I was five, so it’s been 11 years, and my entire family has been training, and I really, really loved being in karate because it’s taught me many different skills from discipline to doing fun tricks. It has taught me to kind of have a fortitude that I would not have gotten outside of martial arts. And it really has allowed me to expand outside of my comfort zone. It allows me to learn to lead, and it’s just a great opportunity that I’m glad that I took up as a kid and continue even now. Every day that we walk into the studio, there’s a big quote on the wall. And, it says, ‘And but for the sky, there are no limits.’ And it’s just a really great quote because sometimes going into the studio is hard. You don’t want to train, you don’t want to, you know, drill the forms all over again and do basics until your legs give out. But, you know, every day you look at that quote, and you’re like, hey, I can do this. There is a certain persistence with that and I just really love karate very much. And I think my favorite thing about karate, above all else, is just the people there, the community that we get to make, and you know, I think that’s what karate is all about: not only strengthening yourself, but strengthening your bonds with others.”
