“My first memory was at a birthday party. It was at my babysitter’s house when I was really young. My babysitter, I called her Aunt Jerry and she and I were very close. I’d spend every day, all day with her. I think it was her son, Philip’s birthday. I remember there was a vanilla cake with lavender highlights on this white cake. Philip had gotten for his birthday a cup of stacking games and it timed you to see how fast you were. I watched Phillip stack the cups and then collapse them and he did it really fast. Then I watched my brother, Nolan do it. He did it also pretty fast, and then I did it and I thought I stacked those cups super fast and they applauded me like I did, like I was the cup stacking champion. But looking back on it, I was really young so I was probably really slow. But it felt really good just hearing that encouragement. It still feels good, especially now since I know that despite the applause being unwarranted, they still loved me and had genuine excitement simply because of their pure enthusiasm for seeing me happy. I think that memory also sort of encapsulates what kind of energy I was surrounded with by my Aunt Jerry. Just very supportive and wholesome.”
