London’s high society in the 1800s is no stranger to modistes sewing dresses, newspaper boys running along the cobblestone streets, illustrious families, scandals, and secrets. These classic period place elements are featured in Netflix’s “Bridgerton.” As of April 14, 2024, “Bridgerton” Season 1 is Netflix’s fourth most-watched show, and “Bridgerton” Season 2 is Netflix’s ninth most-watched show.
The series revolves around the Bridgertons, one of London’s most intriguing and influential families, and their friends as well as their fellow members of the ton, London’s participants of high society. Lady Violet Bridgerton guides her eight children through the marriage market where they are to marry. She’s hopeful that in the end, her children, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth, will all find true love like she once had with her late husband, the eighth Viscount Edmund Bridgerton.
Season one of Bridgerton was centered around Daphne, the oldest of the Bridgerton daughters, and her relationship with Simon, the Duke of Hastings. Simon had been a long-time friend of Daphne’s eldest brother Anthony, attending Eton together as boys. In the first season, Daphne longs to find a true love match like her parents once had, while Simon has made a personal promise to himself to never marry or sire an heir long ago. Daphne and Simon struck a deal that he would pretend to be courting her to keep marriage-minded mamas and flocks of eligible ladies off his back so he would not have to marry, and Daphne would become more popular amongst potential suitors when they saw that a Duke desired her. However as time goes on, the facade starts to fall between the two and they start to grow closer together, which makes them begin thinking, what if they long for each other?
The second season of Bridgerton is focused on Anthony Bridgerton, the viscount and the eldest of his siblings. Anthony, like Simon, had also made a promise to himself when he was younger, he promised that he would never marry for love but for duty. After conducting many interviews to secure a worthy viscountess, Anthony finally meets Ms. Edwina Sharma whose family is being hosted by his mother’s close personal friend Lady Danbury. Edwina would make the perfect viscountess; she is well-mannered, highly educated, and kind, the only problem is that her older sister Kate is standing in the way of the viscount’s plan to court her, he then eventually starts to stray from Edwina and look towards the eccentric, rebellious Kate.
Season three of Bridgerton will be released in two different parts on the popular streaming service, Netflix. Part 1 is scheduled to come out on May 16, 2024, and Part 2 is scheduled to be released on June 13, 2024. The season is to be centered around Colin Bridgerton, the third eldest of the Bridgertons, and Penelope Featherington. Colin and Penelope have been friends as long as they can remember, however out of all of the Bridgerton siblings, Penelope’s best friend would be Eloise. Instead of calling each other Mr. or Ms. which was considered proper etiquette during this time, Penelope would call Colin by his first name and Colin would affectionately refer to Ms. Featherington as “Pen.” While Colin Bridgerton has always been considered popular among society, Penelope Featherington has always been known as a wallflower that tends to blend into the background. According to the season three trailer, Penelope is ready to find a husband after being on the marriage mart for three years and having no prospects and desires to move out of home. Colin strikes a deal with Pen to help her find a husband and guides her through the eligible bachelors of the ton. So after three years of repressed feelings for Colin, will Penelope be finally free as a wallflower and take her place in the sun of high society? And will the one she yearns for finally look her way?
