On the nights of May 10 and May 11, 2024, Aurora Borealis, better known as the Northern Lights, were visible in much of the United States.

Vibrant hues of green, purple, and pink painted the sky.

They are the result of a severe solar storm, involving coronal mass ejections which are massive releases of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun’s corona. This enhances the Northern Lights, allowing us to see nature’s beauty right in our backyard.

Due to its distance from the poles, southeast Michigan rarely has the opportunity to view the Northern Lights.

This was a rare, extraordinary occurrence, that left viewers in awe.

“It was super cool,” Kaylin Grant said. “I never thought I would see them in Michigan.
