Standing behind the register, Mackenzie Schuch excitedly welcomes new customers into her store, Nuuyuu Collective every day. Six months ago the 21-year-old opened her first store, tucked away peacefully in the back corner of the second floor of Kerrytown Market.
The business plan of NuuYuu Collective is simple yet innovative — unlike anything Kerrytown has seen before.
“Basically it’s a version of consignment,” Schuch said. “But instead of us buying individual items from people, they just book out a rack and do a full closet clean out or vintage selling.”
According to the NuuYuu Collective website, sellers book booths for $35 dollars a week, bring in the clothes they wish to sell and Schuch and her team will deal with the rest. Sellers then pack up their booth at the end of the week and split the profits 65/35 with the store.
The customer base is wide-ranging, from U of M students to older women who frequent the biweekly farmers market. Schuch offers that there is something for everyone’s style.
Schuch has known for a long time that Kerrytown is where she wanted to open her inaugural location.
“I worked in Kerrytown at the clean beauty store for three years,” Schuch said. “I love the market in itself, and I know with the farmers market, it’s just a good place to be. So l reached out and the owners recognized me, and we worked it out, and I got the spot I really wanted.”
As a young small business owner, Schuch encourages others just starting out to be confident in themselves and their business.
“Keep going with it. It’s really scary, but if you work hard enough at it, it can pay off. Just fully commit to it.”
NuuYuu Collective is located on the second floor of Kerrytown Market and Shops at 407 N. 5th Ave.
