The Performance Network’s production of Howard Ashman’s (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken’s (music) musical, based of a 1960s comedy, was a great success. With an interesting set, colorful costumes, the cast and crew brought this play to life .
The hilarious, wonderfully tragic, and almost terrifying story follows a young, orphaned flower shop assistant, named Seymour (Jason Richards) who finds a mysterious plant, Audrey II (Naz Edwards). A plant that promises him everything he wants, success, money, and the love of a certain woman who works at the flower shop, Audrey (Courtney Myers). This, however, comes at a price – human blood. Soon Seymour can’t spare more of his own blood and must resort to murder.
This musical is incredibly funny, while at the same time being very creepy. It has the general feel of a comic book. The wonderful costume of Audrey II with the red glow and paint is the only thing that shines out in the dark during scenes where the plant is killing.
Especially enjoyable was the performance of Aaron T. Moore, who plays an evil dentist and an old lady. The variety of his acting and a wonderful mimic were incredibly funny.
The voices of the actors and the band with the musical direction of R. MacKenzie Lewis, the choreography, the set and props, the lighting, and the costumes all worked together to create a beautiful an very memorable evening.
