A small line forms outside The Ark as the crowd eagerly awaits “Les Greene and the Swayzees’” performance of rock n’ soul, a high-energy blend of rock and classic rhythm and blues. The show was free to enter and live-streamed, with nonperishables and donations accepted by Food Gatherers. As the doors opened and fans filed into the cozy venue, anticipation filled the air.
The Ark, originally founded in 1965 as a student-focused coffeehouse, has grown into a respected folk and roots music venue in the country. Though it changed locations over the years, its mission of fostering live music and community has remained the same.
The show began with a dramatic flourish — drums and bass setting the rhythm before a trombone blast announced Greene’s theatrical slide onto the stage. From that moment, the intimate space was transformed by his electric presence.
Greene, who played Little Richard in “Elvis” and gained recognition on “American Idol” commanded the small stage with outsized talent. His performance was physical and impossible to look away from as he jumped between chairs, executed perfect splits midair and quickly moved his feet to the beat.
The band’s chemistry was evident in their tight performance, with each song flowing seamlessly into the next. Standouts “Can You Keep a Secret” and “Baby” particularly ignited the audience, with everyone singing along in their highest voice.
A mid-show costume change added to the excitement, but Greene didn’t need theatrics to command the stage. His powerful voice and energy filled every corner of The Ark, making the small venue feel massive.
Between songs, Greene connected with the audience through stories that ranged from hilarious to emotional. By the end, the audience became a sort of family.
“Les and that’s with one less S than less and an extra E on green,” he quipped during one such moment, drawing laughter from the crowd.
As the night concluded, Greene teased an upcoming release dropping Feb. 28, leaving the audience with something to anticipate beyond this memorable evening.
