Freida McFadden’s newest release, “The Intruder,” is another chilling psychological thriller that proves why she is one of the best authors in the genre. From the very first page, the story pulled me in completely. McFadden has a talent for building tension right away and in this book, the suspense starts the moment the main character, Casey, discovers a blood-covered girl lurking outside her cabin during a storm. From there, the story only gets darker and more intense.
The setting plays a big role in the book’s unsettling tone. Casey’s isolated cabin in the middle of a storm feels claustrophobic and dangerous, almost like another character in the story. The pounding rain, flickering light and howling winds create the perfect backdrop for paranoia and fear. I felt like I was right there, jumping at every noise and second-guessing who to trust.
The mysterious girl outside the cabin adds even more tension. She refuses to say where she came from, clutching a knife like it’s her only lifeline. McFadden masterfully keeps readers questioning — Is she a victim or a threat? Each discovery only raises more questions, and I loved how every chapter ended with a twist that made me want to read “just one more.”
My favorite McFadden book is “Never Lie”. The plot of a couple stranded in a snowstorm who discover terrifying secrets in a secluded house kept me completely hooked from start to finish. While I wouldn’t say “The Intruder” is as good as “Never Lie”, it’s definitely one of her most gripping. The pacing is fast, the chapters are short and the suspense never ends. The twists were clever and unexpected without feeling forced, and even when I thought I had the story figured out, McFadden surprised me again.
“The Intruder” is an addictive, quick read that delivers exactly what I look for in a psychological thriller: tension, mystery and fear. McFadden once again proves why she has earned her reputation as one of the best in the genre. I would give this book a 4-out-of-5; it’s not my favorite book from her, but it’s an incredibly entertaining read that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Final rating: 4/5
