This is the first edition of Dear World, our monthly letter from the editors Kerry Fingerle, Melanie Langa, and Shadi Ahmadmehrabi. Every month, we will focus on a topic on our website or within our staff and discuss it in front of you: the world.

Dear World: A Letter From the Editors Dear World, Take a breath. Enjoy the fresh new winter air. That’s what we’re doing here at The Communicator Web. After a relaxing winter break and time with our families, our staff is more energized than ever.

A new year has begun and we’re looking forward to what it will bring for us: a new semester, new staff members, and new journalistic opportunities.  We want to not only cover events in our high school but to also become more involved in our community. As we immerse ourselves in our larger community, we’re taking more risks and growing out of our comfort zones. We aim to interact more with the people, places, and things outside of Community High School.

Just recently, one of our fellow staff members, Spencer MacDonald, a sports fanatic, traveled to Florida to undertake the challenge of reporting on the Gator Bowl and Michigan Football. He spent time with the coaches, players, and other reporters. Spencer was right there on the sidelines as the game progressed. Although he may have seemed out of place as a high school student, that’s what we do.

As part of our new beginning, we are taking advantage of the fact that journalism opens up new opportunities for us to learn. For example, newcomer Sophie Davis and a few other staff members are gearing up to interview Robert Plant, lead singer of Led Zeppelin. Sophie has been a fan of Led Zeppelin’s music since she was young, and now she is getting the chance to interview her idol.

These are staff members who are branching out and following their interests outside of CHS. Just as students get involved in activities and causes outside of school, it is equally important for our newspaper and staff to do the same. This is an ongoing process for everyone on staff and we’re learning as we go.

Working towards ways to improve and widen the scope of our coverage for the new year has made us realize the importance of becoming involved and asking questions, whether journalistic in nature or not. We’re excited to continue to be involved in learning about what is going on around us. Whether the answers to the questions asked end up in an article or not, it is vitally important to be interested and inquisitive about the community in which we live.
