Even with the recent cold temperatures and snow, spring is in the air at Community High School. With spring comes the annual three-on-three basketball tournament on the basketball court in the back lawn at lunch time. This year, 29 teams have signed up, a record for the tournament. The increased interest in the tournament is a result of the dedication of tournament’s organizer, CHS senior, Josh Fendrick. He has taken charge of the 2011 tournament. As well as organizing the bracket Fendrick has publicized the event, facilitated sign-up and organized the schedule for the tournament. “[Last year] it just went really poorly. There were like 11 teams and it just went so bad so I figured that I cared enough about it that I wanted to make it as good as possible.”
Fendrick is not only the organizer but he is also a competitor. He is on the team “Suga Suga Leif Leif.”
CHS freshman, Casey MacDonald is excited to be competing in his first three-on-three tournament. “My team is [called] Robbie’s Angles and has me, [freshman] Brandon Kazmeirzak, [sophomore] Ruthilah Graff, and [sophomore] Eliza Stein.” MacDonald doesn’t think his team can win, but he wants to do well against his brother Spencer MacDonald. “I wanna kill them,” said MacDonald of playing his brother’s team, The Diversifiers.
With the shortage of court space and time, the tournament is expected to run for the majority of the rest of the year.
Fendrick is excited to get the tournament started as soon as the weather allows him. “It is the most teams that have ever signed up in the tournament so we’re really excited about it.”
Look for photos and updated brackets throughout the tournament.
