The First Day of Snow in Ann Arbor 2011

Kids crossing the street downtown Ann Arbor, perfect day for a field trip.
This morning when I woke up the city was still asleep, everything looked still, as if time stopped during the night.
The snow was amazingly not yet ruined by footprints and car wheels.

There was an unusual quiet for a Wednesday morning and while I was walking to school, careful not to slip on the icy sidewalk, lots of memories came back to my mind brought by the wonderful snow flakes dancing all around.

The first snow of the year always recall memories of childhood and makes you feel a little younger than you are. When sitting in your classroom all you want to do is just build a snowman or slide down a hill.

Today Community students traveled back in their past to share their memories of snow.

“When we were younger we had two Huskies, and my dad would hook them up to a sled and they would pull us down a hill and like they just be going really fast but it was like a lot of fun,” said Emma Sowder.

Sowder was not the only one having fun sledding down hills, “I live right by the hill in Burns Park, and one day my dad took me out. I was so scared, and he just pushed me down this huge hill, which isn’t that big at all, but it was really fun. It was great,” Isaac Scobey-Thal said.

Sophie Faylor, a junior, said, “We used to make snow forts. We’d do this thing where you like carve little caves in the snow. I remember also getting splashed by trucks with slush a lot walking home in like fifth grade. I also clearly remember sledding and hot chocolate, they were usually really fun days.”

“I just remember how me and my friend Andria, we would always make snow men, like in my front yard. We would always go sledding on snow days. I’d always call her up on snow days, and we lived like a block across, and we’d meet like half way between our houses and just go sledding and make snow men, then drink hot cocoa,” senior Anjela Galimberti said.

“I remember having snowball fights on the way to school, playing in the snow pretending you are an angel. Snow angles that’s what their called,” Lil Rumple said.

Snow always makes the day better.
