“A large impact on my life? I think my grandmother. She’s made me want to be a doctor, because she was a pediatrician in the 60s in Russia, where it was very difficult to be a pediatrician, especially if you were a woman in Soviet times. I do not see her a lot. I see her every summer for a few weeks, but we talk a lot on the phone. That’s made us pretty close… I’ve learned [from her] that you choose your own path, and you can do what you say you want to do by deciding that you will make it happen. Whenever I see an obstacle, I try to not go around it, but go through it.”
