GVMMY’s Picks: Trilogy by The Weeknd
An influential piece of 2010s contemporary R&B, “Trilogy” is a collection of The Weeknd’s debut mixtapes, marking the birth of what R&B would become and has been for the past decade. Unlike his newer, more developed and structured releases, “Trilogy” has The Weeknd at his rawest vocally and lyrically, crooning over chilly industrial, minimal sounds as he quarrels about the downward spiral of his unhealthy and monotonous lifestyle. In contrast to much of the upbeat, electronic dance music that raved the early 2010s, The Weeknd had a mystique that intrigued, yet drew listeners to his melancholic trip, which would go on to become a blueprint for many underground and independent artists to come.
