Community has always been a school that is closely associated with art. Our school has a wonderful fine arts programs, including one of the worlds best and one of the few high school combo Jazz programs. However, This is not the only way students make music.
Community High freshman, Sam Gilles, is often seen in the hallways with headphones on and his computer in his lap or the table in front of him. Every now and then we will get up or call over one of his friends to listen to his newest creation. When asked how long one if his songs takes to make he answers: “It varies, each song takes me between two to five hours.”
His music sounds through the first floor and second floor. While playing his music in the hallways many of his friends will start dancing. “This CD took me around a year to make. 80% was composed last summer,” he said. Though he seems to work on his music often he says that school takes up most of his time. “After that school started up and it’s just very difficult to find time to really get into it,” said Gilles.
“It’s interesting” says Eva Hattie Schueler. “It’s not something you would hear on the radio, and you can definitely tell that Sam made it.” Carousel Jones, a student who doesn’t listen to much of Gilles’ music, says “This is really interesting, I would listen to this on a regular basis.” “His music is really awesome!” says Chickata Hart.
“I’ve been making music since I was about eleven. From a technical aspect I make my music by…I have this computer program called FL Studio and you can pencil in different notes and choose your synthesizers and a bunch of different stuff. It’s a computer program that makes music. Most of my inspiration comes from other music, I would say, also little snipits of unfinished things that people post on forums. Every once in a while a site will trigger some sort of emotion, something, I don’t know. Things do that…
It varies, a lot of it is very electronica dance, a lot of it is very folk twisted. I’ve done things from every genre in between there, but those are the two main ones. Although I do enjoy doing fine arts, I find myself gravitating to music more, or, when I get bored I don’t draw, I go and I compose.
Music fascinates me because it’s the language of emotion, we invented visual arts to display feeling and sight…
It varies, the last one took me about a year, I would say most of it, about 80%, was composed last summer and after that school started up and it’s just very difficult to find time to really get into it, so the only real songs that came of that were few and far between. I’ve made a total of eight CDs.
It usually takes me about two to five hours to make a song.”
