“America Runs on Dunkin'” is an iconic catchphrase that accurately describes many people’s relationship with the chain since its establishment. Dunkin’, formerly known as Dunkin’ Donuts, is a quick-service restaurant specializing in coffee and doughnuts. In recent years, the chain has shifted its focus to highlight coffees and other specialized beverages, culminating in the company’s rebrand to Dunkin’ in 2019.

Founder Bill Rosenberg’s experience selling food in factories and construction sites, where coffee and doughnuts were some of the most popular items, inspired him to create the restaurant. Bill Rosenberg would eventually open “Open Kettle” in 1948, selling donuts and coffee in the Boston suburb of Quincy, Massachusetts. The name would eventually be changed to Dunkin’ Donuts after a meeting with company executives. The success of this new restaurant led Rosenberg to start selling franchises in 1955.

The newly opened restaurant here in Ann Arbor offers nitro cold brews and specialty doughnuts exclusive to the store. The small establishment has limited seating and standing room during its busiest times. Staff journalist Jonathan Carter tried the Churro Iced Signature and the Caramel Craze Iced Signature Lattes. Both were incredibly sweet, even for someone who typically prefers sweet coffees. The Churro Iced Signature wasn’t a personal favorite and had an off-putting, artificial taste. While the Caramel Craze Signature was more tolerable and had a well-rounded flavor.

Doughnuts have been a staple at Dunkin’ since its inception. The chain currently offers over 20 flavors, some of which are tastier than others. The newest doughnut, the Churro, was bland and lacking flavor. However, other options like the classic glazed doughnut, the chocolate frosted doughnut and the Boston Kreme are well-loved for their consistent taste and texture.

There are various other unique beverages available like the Dunkin’ frozen coffees and SPARKD’ Energy drinks. Dunkin’ Original coffees are also available offering various flavor options both sweetened and unsweetened. Cold Foam and Shots of Espresso are also available as add-on options. From Dunkin’ wraps to Stuffed bagel minis, Dunkin’ has something for everyone.

In addition to the wide variety of doughnuts and beverages, Dunkin’ continues to innovate with new seasonal flavors and promotions. This combination of classic favorites and new options keeps customers returning for more. The friendly service and quick offerings have made Dunkin’ a beloved go-to spot for coffee and doughnuts for decades
