“It’s not work if you enjoy it.” The phrase describes the crude and lame nature of employment. But does it have to be this way? Mark Twain offers a different perspective into the emotional feelings held behind work when he states “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” This viewpoint is much less pessimistic and truly captures the range of how different people live their lives in the day to day. However, considering how many people work a 9-5, it is truly saddening to know that those same people still struggle to put food on the table and provide for themselves or those close to them just because of the current state of the world. Whether it be the growing disparity between the middle and upper classes, or the increasing rate of inflation, many jobs that were once flexible and healthily paying, are now strict with clock in times, barely paying, or cut entirely due to technological advancements.
Although it may be necessary in the short run, you should not work at a job you don’t enjoy for the reasons previously listed. Firstly, because of the new technological advancements employed that have cut jobs, there are just as many new opportunities to use technology to your advantage. From automating processes like shipping out orders and using machinery to produce any product, technology gives way for a better quality of life and ease when it comes to a manufacturing business or countless other businesses that involve sending out goods, many of which processes are crucial towards someone who has started their own business. With phones as well being categorized closer and closer to a basic human need, using technology and the internet to reach out and help try and create a job experience you enjoy becomes easier and easier.
The psychological benefits are also clear. If you work at a job that you despise and hate doing, as time goes on the more likely you will feel burnt out and perform worse at your job. I know that there are circumstances where living is harsh and clocking in day after day is necessary to maintain living, however if possible, one should attempt to pursue a job they are passionate about and work in that field. If someone also finds a job they genuinely are interested in, they are more likely to scale their work and expand, which would award more monetary gain over time.
Working for yourself or at a job that has flexible hours benefits both you and your employer. Working at a place you like, you would not wanna leave your job or pursue other work, so your employer would feel secure with your position, and your life would be more flexible if you only/mostly work the hours you want. If you only live once, why would you want to spend hours and days at a job you hate or even feel bored with. If the circumstances are right, enjoy your time, do what you want, work how you would want.
