The Neutral Zone, Ann Arbor’s local teen run teen center, is known for their committed teens. One program called the Visual Arts Committee or VAC, which is run by teens, created an art show to bring out teen artists, performers and musicians from around Ann Arbor area. “Dreams: A Stumble Into Your Subconscious” was the name of the show. Teens from Dexter, Community, Pioneer, Skyline, Huron, and Greenhills High schools participated by submitting art to the show and performing as well. There were college recruiters from University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Columbia looking to hand out scholarships to teen artists or even just critique art.

“We have two hundred and fifty art pieces, including performances, and more coming,” said Trevor Stone, the NZ Arts Coordinator. There was a wide range of visual arts at the show including paintings, sculptures, photographs, fashion, drawing, installations,mixed-media and much more. There were also two hours of performances such a bands, ambient music, dancers, and interactive performers. The amount of diversity of art was amazing.

The show was full of wall to wall art pieces and had a constant stream of people flowing around the B-Side. One of the performances by Cassidy Fowler, from Community, was a mixture of hip-hop and dreamlike dance moves. There was also a few performers from MC Workshop, another program at the Neutral Zone, performing raps. The show was catered by other teens at the NZ, and had a good mixture of visual art and performance art.

One Skyline art class sent in around 30 pointillism art pieces made with marker. Pointillism is a technique of painting with tiny dots of pure colors that blend in the viewer’s eye. The students did a great job using many different forms of art. The dreams ranged from spongebob to crazy out-of-this-world landscapes.

“Over all I feel that this art show was one of our biggest shows yet,” said Stone.
