Ann Arbor has been chosen as one of only nine cities around the country to show several films from the Sundance Film Festival. The Michigan Theater (603 East Liberty Street) in downtown Ann Arbor will show three selections from the festival in the coming week.

On Sunday, January 23rd, the theater will begin to show a program called 2010 Sundance Shorts.  These shorts will be screened daily through Wednesday, January 26th.  On January 27th, the Michigan Theater will play Win, Win at 7:30pm.  The following day, Ann Arbor will also host Cedar Rapids at 7:30pm.

Tickets can be purchased online via Ticketmaster on the Michigan Theater website or by calling (800) 745-3000.  Tickets are $9 general admission, $7 students, seniors and US veterans, or $6.50 for Michigan Theater members for the 2010 Sundance Shorts. These tickets are available at the door if not purchased as part of a package deal. Tickets for the movie screenings can be reserved in advance and are $15. Series passes including tickets for the shorts and both movies are $35.

Ann Arbor is the only location outside of Park City, Utah to host more than one Sundance Film Festival movie screening. Eight other cities were chosen as part of the Sundance Film Festival USA Campaign which, according to a press release from the Michigan Theater, “is designed to introduce the Festival experience to film-loving audiences nationwide.”

The other cities chosen to screen Sundance Film Festival material are Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Madison, Wisconsin; Nashville, Tennessee; New York, New York; San Francisco, California and Seattle, Washington.

“Ann Arbor is the only city that will host two Sundance Film Festival USA screenings in 2011,” said David Courier, Senior Programmer of the Sundance Film Festival. “Cedar Rapids was filmed in Ann Arbor, and we, along with the film team, feel strongly that its residents should be among the first in the world to see the completed film,” he said.

This is the second year in a row Ann Arbor has been chosen as an offsite screening location for the Sundance Film Festival.

“The Michigan Theater is ecstatic to welcome not just one, but two official selections in our second year as part of Sundance Film Festival USA,” said Michigan Theater’s Marketing Director, Drew Waller. “[We have] lots to celebrate and [are] glad to be the place to do that celebrating.”
