Paper hearts lined the floor as hundreds of people entered the Michigan Theater for the premiere of the romantic documentary “My Heart is an Idiot” on April 22, 2011. It seemed as though nearly all of Ann Arbor came out to see the film, directed by David Meiklejohn and starring Davy Rothbart, a Community High graduate and creator of “Found” magazine. The two spoke to the crowd at the pre-show reception inside the Michigan Theater. They thanked everyone involved in creating the movie, including volunteers, Zingerman’s Catering, and the Saginaw family.

“This movie is very much a product of Ann Arbor,” Meiklejohn said at the pre-show reception. Rothbart, Meiklejohn, and Alex Gross, who also appears in the film, stayed afterwards to answer questions from the audience.  Meiklejohn spoke of how Ann Arbor families and businesses helped him create the film.

The film itself includes several scenes and references to Ann Arbor, including a particularly poignant scene at the Huron River. While “My Heart is an Idiot” follows Rothbart and his friends all around the country, the film stayed true to its Wolverine roots. Charming, laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking at times, “My Heart is an Idiot” portrayed Rothbart as a quirky writer with — as the title implies — a less than fruitful love life. The film, though originally intended to feature Rothbart and his brother on their tour to promote “Found”, focused on the apparent roller coaster ride of Rothbart’s love life.
