On October 3, Community High School jazz band students were treated to a concert and masterclass in Kerrytown Concert House with the avant garde jazz trio, Trio X. Trio X was started in the late 1980s by horn player, Joe McPhee. The trio is completed with Dominic Duval on bass and Jay Rosen on Drums.
The group arrived in Ann Arbor after a nine hour drive from upstate New York to a room of anxious jazz students. The trio began playing their unique sound but were more interested in hear the CHS groups play. Two advanced combos, Dig This and A2 Blue, played for the professionals. The trio listened closely, critiquing as they played and every once in awhile stepping in to play with the students.
The students will have another chance to learn from the pros when renowned jazz guitarist, Randy Napoleon stops by Community next Wednesday, October 10 in the Craft Theater at 3:30pm.
