BCS Bowl Recap

The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is the top tier of Bowl games at the collegiate level. There are five BCS bowl games: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, FIesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, and the National Championship.

The Rose Bowl was played in Pasadena,California on Jan. 1, 2013. The winner of the Big Ten plays the winner of the Pac 12. This year the Wisconsin Badgers, who went 4-4 in the Big Ten, played the Stanford Cardinal, who want 8-1 in the Pac 12. Both teams won their conference championship games to play in the rose bowl. Stanford took an early lead going up by 14 in the first quarter, off of two rushing touchdowns. Wisconsin answered with two touchdowns in the second quarter, but Stanford kicked a field goal, to keep the lead going into halftime up 17-14. The defense dominated the second half, as the only points came from a field goal by Stanford in the fourth quarter. Wisconsin’s hopes were crushed when Curt Phillips, the Wisconsin quarterback, threw an interception with two minutes to go in the game.

The Sugar bowl is played in the superdome in New Orleans  Louisiana on  This Year the third ranked Florida Gators Played the twenty-first ranked Louisville Cardinals. Louisville kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter to put the game out of Florida’s reach. Florida ended the game scoring two touchdowns, but it was not enough to beat the Cardinals.

In the Orange bowl, the twelfth ranked Florida State Seminoles played the fifteenth ranked Northern Illinois Huskies in Miami, Florida at Sun Life stadium, in front of 72 thousand people. This game was controversial before the it even started. The Huskies are from the MAC conference, a small and typically looked over conference, made it to a BCS bowl game. Most people thought that it would be a blowout as the Seminoles are a much more popular and bigger football school. The Huskies held their own. The game started off with Florida State scoring a touchdown. The Huskies answered with a field goal, making the score at the end of the first quarter 7-3. In the second quarter the defenses played well, as Florida State scored only one touchdown. The Huskies scored a touchdown in the third quarter, answered by a field goal from Florida. The fourth quarter started off with a 17-10 lead for Florida state. The Seminoles finally overpowered the Huskies and pulled away, winning the game 31-10.

The Fiesta bowl this year pitted the fourth ranked Oregon Ducks against the fifth ranked Kansas State Wildcats. Oregon started scoring early in the game by returning the opening kick for a touchdown, then scoring on the two-point conversion. The Ducks went on to score once more in the first quarter, a touchdown with three minutes left. The second quarter started off differently though. K-State scored a touchdown and a field goal to bring them within five points of the Ducks. The first half was not over. With 14 seconds remaining,Kenjon Barner of Oregon threw a 24 yard TD pass to end the half with a 12 point, 22-10, lead.
