Shrek the Musical – Photo Story

A feeling of adrenaline and anticipation filled the backstage corridors of the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, two hours before curtain on opening night for Young People’s Theater’s production of “Shrek The Musical”. Cast members in costume as ogres, citizens of the kingdom of Duloc, and classic fairytale characters such as the Three Little Pigs, the Big Bad Wolf and the Fairy Godmother all rushed to and from their dressing rooms.

Shrek started out as a goofy animated movie, which mocks many of the “classic” fairytale conventions. “I think that people tend to write ‘Shrek’ off as a musical with a lot of farts in it,” Huntoon said. But while the story includes lots and lots of laughs, “This is a show with an awful lot of heart and joy,” Huntoon said.

The show was adapted from the popular film about an ogre, Shrek, who falls in love with a princess, Fiona. Aris Chalin, a CHS freshman, played Shrek. “It’s definitely a more modern show,” Chalin said. Along with a not-so-classic love story, the musical tells how the fairytale creatures, exiled as “freaks” from Lord Farquaad’s Kingdom, embrace their differences.

This musical, first performed on Broadway in 2008, entertained the audience with catchy tunes, funny lyrics and plain goofy lines in the script “I’ve never heard ‘blah blah blah’ [as song] lyrics in a broadway musical before,” Chalin said.

The production was immensely enjoyed by both cast and crew. Emily Fishman, a CHS junior, who played Gingy the Gingerbread Man, said, “I got to spend every day with my best friends.” Chalin said there was never a dull moment, off stage or on. Caroline Huntoon, the director of this production, said, “I am thrilled with how everything came together.”
