Opening the concert was The Low Anthem, an American folk-rock band from Rhode Island. The band had an eclectic sound, employing instruments like the clarinet, upright bass, and even audience members’ cell phones. “In a beautiful theater like this, it makes a beautiful sound,” said Ben Knox Miller, the band’s vocalist, referring to the historic Michigan Theater.

The show really started when the Avett Brothers took the stage. Their five piece band varied from the classic combination of guitar, drums, and keyboards: they were also accompanied by a cello and a banjo. In addition to the musical performance, the Avett Brothers were also backed by  three color changing backdrops that alternated throughout the show.

The sold out performance on March 9th was the last of the Avett Brothers’ tour in the States: The band is playing concerts around Europe and Australia throughout March and April. “This is a very nice U.S. send off,” send one of the band members.

Their newest album, I and Love and You (2009, American Recordings) is their major-label debut.  With tracks like “Kick Drum Heart”, an upbeat rock song, and “I and Love and You”, this album boosted the band’s popularity more so than any of their others.

The Avett Brothers played tracks from several albums, as well as an unrecorded song called “Skin and Bones”.
