Walking to a Beat

Walking from place to place can become boring and tiresome. To assist those who do not know how to enjoy walking these songs may help you out. These five songs epitomize head bobbing jamz. Factors taken into account include, bass lines, length, tempo, and feel

5) Rapper’s Delight, The Sugarhill Gang (Single) 14:37

Starting off the top five is Rapper’s Delight. The Sugar Hill Gang’s biggest hit, this song is a party. While listening to Rapper’s Delight pay close attention to the ridiculous lyrics, such as “So after school, I take a dip in the pool which is really on the wall”. Unfortunately Rapper’s Delight does become a little repetitive which is one of the few problems holding Rapper’s Delight from a higher rank.

4) On The Sunny Side Of The Street, Jimmy McHugh, Dorothy Fields (Sonny Side Up) 5:41

The only jazz song on the list, this recording features an all-star line up. Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stit, and Dizzy Gillespie fill out the horn section. After a stressed out day this song is perfect for a relaxing walk.
The chill mood of the song is gives your mind space to wander while still holding your attention. For the jazz musicians out there every solo is excellent and is perfect for transcription and learning from.

3) Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia), Us3 (Hand on The Torch) 4:39

A funky, hip-hop, version of the Herbie Hancock song Cantaloupe Island Us3 masterfully blends the genres. Cantaloupe Island is a great song to walk to in its own regard Cantaloop elevates the song to entirely new level. At about four and a half minutes long the song is a great beginning to a long walk.
Although the rapping is not top notch, the feel of the rhythms more than makes up for this. Humming along to the funky piano is required while listening and when the horns come in you may feel like dancing instead of walking. If the rapping was better instead of just “Cool” and “Ya” than Cantaloop could have snagged a higher spot.

2) Chameleon, Herbie Hancock (Headhunters) 15:40

For anyone who has never heard Chameleon the unforgettable bass line will be stuck in your head for weeks. With a faster tempo, Chameleon can get you where you need to be. 15 minutes may seem too long to stay interesting but that’s the point. The song turns into a chill version of the funky start about halfway through.
Chameleon is perfect for walks to meet friends. The song prepares you for great time. As an honorable mention Watermelon Man off of the same album is a perfectly acceptable substitute for Chameleon.

1) Shaky Ground, The Temptations (Single) 4:03

Shaky Ground takes the number one spot by a long shot. The intro will give you the chills every time you listen. Then the driving bass drum gives each one of your steps meaning while jamming out to this song.
If getting to your destination on time is an issue do not listen to Shaky Ground. It’s impossible to step at any speed besides the slow beat of the song. Four minutes makes this song perfect for the walk to your car after school or work. Shaky Ground is an excellent finish to any day.
