“Bam!”
The gun went off. I sprinted off the line and led out the JV girls’ race. Forgetting about my numb feet, I focused on my position, as one girl passed me by 200 meters– I kept fighting.
The first mile was a breeze, but in the second mile, one of my teammates caught up to me. I stuck behind her knowing I had 800 meters left and had to go around her. It was the only way to earn a spot in a varsity race.
My frozen body came across the line in 17th place.
